Understanding photography

Perspective is crucial when setting up an image. Make sure your CGI team or photographers know what they are doing!

We generally shoot our own photography. There are several reasons for this, but a big one – and I know this sounds a bit harsh – is that a lot of photographers don’t know what they are doing.

This follows on from my post yesterday about having great tools, but not really knowing how to use them.

An iPhone can take darn good photos, and most cameras do everything automatically. I guarantee that 99% of cameras used aren’t taken out of full ‘auto’ mode!

But taking a ‘great’ photo is more than pointing a camera and clicking the shutter.

Here at Blink Image, when creating a new image, we pre-visualise EVERYTHING.

  • We use Google StreetView to check out the context and see if there are any possible issues.
  • We create a 3D model and mock up possible positions to set up the ideal composition that delivers what the image needs to deliver.
  • We add a sun to our model and test different times of day to get the best shot to really make your building ‘pop’.

Doing this makes sure that when our team arrive on site to take the photography, they know exactly what they are doing.
